Google Webmaster Tools Redesigned
May 22, 2009Google Webmasters Tools, a tool initially used for online publishers to submit their sitemap, but has grown to become an essential tool to track your site crawl data from Google. I haven’t been checking my account recently and was pleasantly surprised at the overhaul. The change is quite pleasing, somewhat like the redsign of Google Reader.
The navigation ahve also been regrouped and redesigned into a expandable/collapsible menu, which saves quite a few page loads. The links spanning 7 categories in the old design has been reclassified into 3 categories, namely:
- Site configuration (where you provide Google with information about your site)
- Your site on the web (where you can view Google data about your site)
- Diagnostics (where you can get reports on any problems we encountered crawling your site)
In my opinion, this does makes things easier to find somewhat. Anything that reduces the number of pageload and time on my part is a welcomed change.
Though there are still a few issues to iron out, like URL truncation, wide screen issues, their goal of making
“stats and data more discoverable, while removing redundant pages and features (such as Index stats) that cluttered the interface and reproduced information available elsewhere.”
has largely been achieved.
