Attachment Selection and Upload Progress Bar
February 27, 2009While sending photos of my friend’s recent concert, I realized that Gmail had made changes to their file attachment process. Previously, it was very troublesome to send multiple files to people. You’ll have to select the files one at a time. Furthermore, attaching large files usually gets me very irritated as the page will freeze while I saved the email as draft.
Now, to send multiple files, all we have to do is to hold down “CTRL” or “SHIFT” and select all the files you want. All these files will then be placed and uploaded in queue. This really saves alot of time if you have multiple small files to upload.
However, in my opinion, the best update this time round was not ability to select multiple files. It is the “inline” uploading of your files, and the addition of the progress bar that is really the best part of this update. In fact, in terms of user-interface design, this is a step in the right direction as the user gets feedback on the progress. I am sure there were times when you were saving your email and the only feedback we get is “Gmail is still working”.
EDIT (1610hrs): I just realized there is an announcement on this update posted on the Official Gmail Blog
Here’s a screenshot from their blog:

Big cheers to the Gmail Team!
